What Singles Me Out
Where I’ve Been, What I’ve Done
I had a varied professional life in Hong Kong and the UK — within the inner workings of Government and in private business, as an employee and as a business owner. (I'm now an Australian citizen, living in Perth.)
I've brought with me a baggage-load of experience of handling working relationships, of insights into what makes a business work and the importance of focusing on the needs of those who seek your advice. (The same imperative goes for those who want to know more about your product or service).
As a result I've acquired “a many-splendoured thing” — a realisation that it’s better to listen and learn.
So, although undoubtedly I am marketing myself and wish to present to you qualities I believe will assist you in furthering your own business interests, I want you to understand that if you hire me I will want to gather insight from you about your business.
The more I can learn, the more effective I’ll be in promoting your business.

Experience — The Great Teacher
Be it research, be it text editing or just going step-by-step through my writing process , I have this nagging voice in my head — “do it properly because anything less is insufficient.” Anything that is insufficient will cause problems down the line — and it will take longer to repair than the time needed to have done it right in the first place.
So also with checking and rechecking. You can't do enough of it. Be it what you have researched or what you write down for others to read.
The key is recognising one's own weaknesses, and that's a hard road to travel. That said, I know there is no such thing as overdoing the process of reassessment.
I learnt these things from experience (as we do) and through the wise advice of a mentor early in my working life. The mistakes I made in my early years occurred because either I was over-confident or not thorough enough or in too much of a hurry. We go through this process of hard knocks, and if we’re lucky and learn from our crassness we come out of it the better.

Copywriting is about persuasion. Its purpose is to change the mindset of its reader.
Now, let me make it clear here and now that I am not an advertisement writer, and nor do I include hyperbole in my skills armoury. I believe that straightforward objective and accurate information is the strongest form of persuasion. If a product or service is worthwhile it will actually sell itself — all it needs is a writer who can spell it out.

Writing is What I Do Best — So Judge Me
I’ve been writing all my life, privately and professionally. You learn over time what is effective writing and what is not. No one reads ineffective writing, and so it achieves little.
At the core of any writing is an understanding of the basics of grammar, syntax, punctuation and spelling. It applies to both the sales pitch of the toothpaste advert as well as the white paper on a new product. The essential difference is that the report on the manufacturing breakthrough cannot mess around with proper writing. It stands or falls on its correct style and its recognition of the reader's requirements, as it does on the features and benefits of the new product's innovations.
That’s why I write the more demanding copy that informs with a strict line of accuracy and objectivity.
It’s how I like to write, and what makes me comfortable with what I do write.
